Actual Play: Party of One Podcast
Battle of the Gods » Devlog
I'm excited to announce that my game has been played on an actual play podcast called Party of One, where Jeff Stormer is joined each episode by a guest. For this episode, he is joined by Cole Burkhardt to play Battle of the Gods. They play two rounds of the game to explore the myths of the World Engine and the ways it changes. It's a delightful listen and a great way to see what this game is like. Also, back Null/Void while you're here. And once you're done listening, I wrote my thoughts below!
Creator's thoughts
- The Pantheon is kind of an interesting thing to consider, and I bring that up because they highlighted there were only two gods. There are two ways to handle this, as I see it. 1) The PCs are the only gods 2) There are other gods, but not as important as the PCs. Its largely a matter of flavor, as I've played it both ways before.
- For the origin, I intended on players to agree on an option and collaborate together to figure out what it means. But honestly, having heard how they played it, each player picking an aspect is really interesting too.
- One of my favorite parts of play, both listening and participating, is finishing up world creation and just talking about what life is like in the place you invented.
- This might seem odd to people, I honestly wish I highlighted my thought process better, but the rules do state for each player to follow character creation on their own. My main reason for this is because, it puts more of a focus on each individuals interpretation of the world, keeps things a little more chaotic and lively.
- Watching them roleplay dialogue was really fun. Despite this being an rpg, the game is very removed in scope and the narrative framing of myths means these are largely retroactive interpretations of the characters. So having small dialogue between the characters added something neat.
- While I did write rules on continued games very loosely, it was really interesting to see what that was like in play. It really highlights what I would say is a central theme of the game: the world keeps moving on. Seeing them use dead gods from a previous game for the second cycle was really clever, I'm not sure if that was something I considered but, it makes a lot of sense.
