Gameplay Example: Rattrap
This is a session of Battle of the Gods I played at a friend's place.
The world we made is a dead rat in a mouse trap where maggot-folk find beauty in areas untouched by the miasma surrounding the “land”
It’s both literally a dead rat & a lived in world, I guess? Below is what our world looked like by the end of the game. Each table presented is a page detailing the world or a character that I've transcribed here.
This first sheet is all the information about our world, reflected by the state it was in at the end of the game.
The World Name: Rattrap Origin: Slain Tags Quality: Value: Myths Origin: A (kind) rat was slain by a trap & drowned the world in miasma. People accidentally emerged to see beauty in it, but are haunted by the ghost of the world. Battle begins: Hue-mown's approach Fight: Theona & Quarwen. Theona prophesied Hue-mown's approach. Quarwen tricks Theona with a gift, bracelets that are manacles. Iri leaves, taking the moon. The people (maggots?) leave the world in exodus. |
We had four players, and thus four gods. Two of them were closer to literal gods (Quarwen & Theona) the others were aspects of world around deified (Hue-mown & Iri the beetle)
God-Identity Name: Quarwen Title: of the Red Hands Presence: Dirty Eyes: Soft Clothes: Simple Weapon: Sword Concept Purview: Creation & Ritual Symbol: Forge Goal: Change - add or remove things from the world Enhancements Hero Worship: On a hit, add "remove all Plagues from the world " to the options Questions Origin: Emerged from a knot of matted fur Prominent Myth: Tried to lure Iri (for her iridescent shell) into her forge again & again. It illustrates her fool-hardy qualities Fighting gods: To save the world, the others must die Want for the world: To be remade beautiful. Fears Iri will turn the world into something she couldn't live with |
Quarwen of the Red Hands was a forge god who made weapons & sculptures. She emerged from a knot of rat fur & wanted to make the world beautiful. A story is told where she foolishly tries to lure Iri into her forge again & again for her shell but fails every time.
Identity Name: Theona Title: The Warm End Presence: Beautiful Eyes: Sad Clothes: Dazzling Weapon: Needle Concept Purview: Love, Death Symbol: Hearth Goal: Ruin - end the world Questions Origin: Love half of evil rat ghost Myth: Rotted Theona's sculpture garden Myth 2: Scared Hue-mown Myth 3: Infatuated with Iri Enhancements Earth Mother Prophetsize - Hue-mown |
When the rat died, its vengeful ghost became a demon who haunted the world. It's kindness became Theona, The Warm End: The hearth goddess of love & death. She wanted the world to die beautifully. One myth says she used to meet in Quarwen's sculpture garden to talk about all the things they both loved of this place. However, her presence slowly rusted Quarwen's art and Theona was cast out forever in response.
Identity Name: Hue-mown Title: The Home Owner Presence: Mysterious Eyes: Scared Clothes: Simple Weapon: many Concept: Purview: Health & Fate Symbol: Tools Questions What is origin: new homeowner set trap to kill rat Prominent myth w/ another god: world remains b/c Theona filled me with fear & guilt Why fighting: to clean house want & why: remove dead rat & clean house for flipping Enhancements World ender: remove tag Kingdom Come: I live, if world destroyed |
Hue-mown, the Home Owner, is seen as a greater figure from outside Rattrap. He wishes to remove the rat so that this place called "home" can be clean but is often scared away by Theona, the rat's ghost.
Identity: Name: Iri Title: The Unthinking Presence: Shifting Eyes: Otherworldly Weapon: Pincers Concept: Goal: Change Purview: chaos, nature Symbol: moon Questions Came from egg in the wall Iri dazzled the rat before it died so Theona has a certain affinity for me Quarwen wants my shell, Hue-mown wants to kill me, Theona seems like Quarwen to me ( can't tell the difference) Enhancements Mother of Monsters: add a plague God Head: +2 |
Iri the Unthinking, a beautiful beetle found near Ratrap. She carries a shard of glass that contains the moon. Theona is said to adore Iri's beauty, but Iri never seems to notice.
After we had created these gods, we each made the roll to signify the Battle of the Gods and determine its result. After spending a moment taking our turns and interpreting what happened, this was the story of how this event changed Rattrap.
It began when Theona foresaw Hue-mown's approach. He came because Iri started laying countless eggs, filling Rattrap with her spawn. Quarwen tricked Theona with a gift: dazzling bracelets that were actually manacles. They died fighting each other. Hue-mown got rid of the rat and killed Iri's children. Iri flew away never to be seen again. The maggot-people found their world unlivable and left in exodus.
Thus ending the Battle of the Gods.
